Looking At Different Machines, Looking For Your Opinions

I have been looking at CNC machines for carving and wood working for some time. I started out looking at the CarveWright machine to begin with. Then I read about the numbers of owners that were not satisfied with their machine. I also questioned the capabilities of the machine for the type of projec...

Re: Curved Surface-Scrimshaw

I found a spring loaded engraving tool for a cnc machine. Looks interesting wonder if anyone has use one similar to this for engraving on a curved surface. Here is the link: http://www.2linc.com/engraving_mini_1-4.htm examples of some curved surface work: http://www.2linc.com/engraving_examples.htm

Re: Curved Surface-Scrimshaw

Bob no I do not have either one at this time. I keep hearing how great Aspire is, but it is not inexpensive. I like your suggestion about using the probe to get the curvature of the horn. That really was my question, could you etch the surface of the horn when the horn is not perfectly flat. I am gu...

Re: Curved Surface-Scrimshaw

Bob I saw that post and that is pretty neat. The image quality on the shell was very good. I wanted to try a powder horn with scrimshaw and use cnc to etch the surface. The machine is a much better artist then I would ever be. Thanks for the response.

Curved Surface-Scrimshaw

This maybe more of hardware question rather than a software question. I was thinking about doing some scrimshaw on a powder horn using PhotoCarve. The surface of the powder horn has a curved surface. Anyone have any suggestions on how to use PhotoCarve on a curved surface.

Re: Which Shark, which router?

Thanks guys for your answers and insights. My thinking is the Colt is a trimmer and I would think a full scale router would not put as much stress on the equipment and you would get a better cut.

Router Size

I have been looking at the Shark cnc and the Shopbot Desktop. I like the Shark but I like the capability of the larger and stronger router on the Shopbot. Does the Shark cnc machine have the ability to use a larger router then the Bosch Colt router?

Re: CNC Machine Opinions, Thanks In Advance

Joe thank you for the through analysis and your time to respond. You made some very good points about the software setup before you send it to the cnc machine. I am leaning towards the Shark, but I have to do my due diligence before taking the next step. Thanks again.

CNC Machine Opinions, Thanks In Advance

I have been working with wood for a number of years and thought I would like to get into wood carving. I know I do not have the talent of wood carving by hand. I have been looking at CNC for awhile. Can you give me an honest opinion the CNC Shark. I was wondering how detail the finish carving really...
