Small Fonts

Post by Tim Miller »

Hi,

I am new to your forum and new to CNC and am amazed by the amount of knowledge here. I have a project coming up that will require very small fonts, in the area of 10pt. Arial, roughly 1/8 - 3/16" in height. What bit and toolpath should I be using to accomplish this? I have tried using 60degree and 90 degree V-bits and am unhappy with the results as they aren't very readable, they tend to be cut deeper than I want and run over into each other. Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tim Miller

Tim,

Use a 30 deg v bit https://www.centuriontools.com/router-b ... =363&sat=1
45 deg v bit https://www.centuriontools.com/router-b ... =361&sat=1

and you control the depth of cut in your v carve toolpaths and also in your tool data base. Look at edit text spacing hold down shift key and left mouse button to expand the spacing between letters. Any more questios just ask.

I prefer the Amana Ingroove bit for V carving and etching, .005" tip. And the blades are replaceable and easly sharpened.

For fine detail and small lettering I use an Onsrud BDP#37-21 with a .005" tip. I've set my flat depth as shallow as .004"-.005" deep with very good results in some wood.

A big Thank You to all of you for the help. I can't wait to get back in the shop this weekend and give these ideas a try.
