Touch Probe Questions

Post by ohiolyons »

Got the Touch probe the other day, installed fine and got the Registration Key back from Next Wave in less than an hour.

Tried scanning the quarter since Rockler shows a quarter being scanned as a sale promotion.

I tried scanning at 0.04 @ 10 ipm as the Next Wave documentation suggests and it looked like a bottle cap.
I tried scanning at 0.02 @ 10 ipm as the Next Wave documentation suggests and it looked less like a bottle cap.
I tried scanning at 0.005 @ 10 ipm as the Rockler YouTube video suggests for generic scanning and I can only make out the eagles chest knowing that what it is.
The 0.005 run took 4 hours so I'm concerned about trying 0.001.

My question is has anyone scanned a quarter in and does it look like a quarter??
If so what settings did you use and could you send me your scanned in file so I know what I'm shooting for?

I guess I assumed the image on the Rockler website of the quarter was an implied resolution quality statement.

I hope it is just operator error and appreciate any guidance anyone can provide in advance.

John,

You really do need to scan fine details at fine steps.

I created the probe video. With the rope molding, the difference between the default step over and the 0.001 step is dramatic. in the video you can see the two scans, the lower resolution had relatively huge lumps in it.

The downside as you have noticed is that with each increase in step over, there is a massive increase in the run time. Same is true for the cutting. An 11 inch long by 3/4" wide rope mold at 0.001" step took about 9 hours to scan if I recall.

Thanks for the fast response.

So if I want the detail from a quarter I'm gonna have to scan at 0.001!
I didn't want to waste the time scanning at that level if I was doing something wrong, guess I'll try, point of honor now.

At he end of your Rockler video you referenced, you said something about a follow on video covering importing the stl file.
Has this video been done or did I just miss it or did I misunderstand the video?

Again thanks for the quick turn around on this topic and all the other topics you respond to, it really helps the rest of us!!!!!

It was recently finished and Rockler has it. I'm not sure of it's fate now but I can check.

Again thanks, I'll recently added Rockler as a subscription so I should be notified when it hits youtube.

I did a coin when I first got the probe and it looked like the actual coin. I think I just started it and went to bed, was ready when I woke up. Not sure how long it ran

could you post a photo or the files (stl, crv)?

Do you remember what x and y step over or the inches per minute you used?

Sorry, I didn't save it. I bought it with the CNC and it was my first week so I have no idea what I was using but I probably just used whatever default settings were. Sorry I couldn't help more. I haven't used it since that one time
