Scoutmaster box

Post by BillK »

Here's a box I designed and made that was ordered for a retiring boy scoutmaster. The key feature is the Boy Scout emblem that I created in Aspire and inlayed into the box top with a .007" offset. Everything done on my Shark pro plus, including the box joints. Red Oak.

Thanks!

Excellent work, especially on the Boy Scout emblem.
I have had my Shark only for a short time and have not advanced to Aspire yet.
However what you and others can do is very impressive.
How long have you been using Aspire and do you know how much time went into the design of the emblem?

Thanks all for your kind comments.

I have been using Aspire for about 1.5 years. I have used other CAD packages and 3D software in the past also.

Aspire is a great product. It gives you many options and approaches on how you can create the bas relief style of carving. I usually try the easiest one first which is importing a picture and let the software do it. In this case I wasn't happy with that result, so I went the path of bringing in a drawing that an artist made, understanding the artists intentions in terms of depth, then creating a model. It's neither as difficult or as easy as you might think, but it is always doable. In this case I started with a wing, then mirrored that, went on to the head and shoulders, the tail feathers, and the feet. The shield I was able to let the software vector trace. The stars I created and copied. The fleur de lis was also a vector trace.

All together, I probably spent close to 5 hours. I know I can use this model again and I enjoyed creating it so I don't mind the time to get it right. The rest of the top and front probably took 25 minutes to design.
