All:

This is a great project and I appreciate Bob posting the project information and his experiences with it. After building one, I'm already thinking about another. I have been reviewing my initial project and looking to build something a little different.

Bob, I noticed you were working on "The William Tell Overture". Would you be willing to share the pin map for it? I'm still looking for someone to help me with the music.

I have been looking at other Xylophone options and see a couple options:

1. A D'Luca 13 note Glockenspiel - If you used this Xylophone assembly you could use the entire rack assembly as the rack is of wood construction.

2. D'Luca 12 Note wood Xylophone - Using this Xylophone assembly you could also use the entire rack assembly. Of course this would be a greater departure from the original design. But I think the wood tone bars would create a music box with "richer" tones. The case would need to be longer to accommodate the longer tone bars and I think the mallets would need to be larger in diameter because they will have to be longer too. Of course the hole spacing on the slats and the pivot spacing shims might need to be adjusted too. I really like the idea of the wooden tone bars.

Since the main theme with this project is Music I stumbled on several thumb piano's. I think this would be a good musical woodworkers project. I'm attaching a link for one of the more decorative ones. If your interested search for other designs. http://www.amazon.com/X8-Drums-Large-Go ... 9EAJBVHCM6

I'm not recommending purchasing any of these. It is just inspiration for another ground up project. I bet the grandkids won't be able to keep there hands off of one of these. I see there are both round and square designs. My initial thought is to make a bowl shaped sound chamber with decorative carving on the surface of the dome model used for the outside of the bowel. For the dished side I would use The same dome model. I recommend the Dished Tutorial in Vectric Support for detail instructions on how this is done. Then I would carve a separate carved face piece. Some of the face decoration would be cut through. A third decorative carving for the handle could be used too. We would just borrow the simple design of adjustable metal keys assembly. I'm sure any of us could do a better job than the one picture in the link. I'd be interested any constructive comments on this project idea.

Have a great weekend!

Rod,
I'll let you know when we start it. With the weather getting warmer we're beginning outdoor projects now.

I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.

Thanks Buc,
Progress is coming along quite well. So far I have 19 marbles.
Only 1,981 to go and I can start building...
