Re: cedar slab carving

Pen turning is another one of my hobbies that I was doing before getting my Shark so I had to learn about drying wood as well. Painting the ends of fresh cut wood will lessen and most times avoid cracking in logs but it must be done as soon as possible after the log is cut. You may still get crackin...

Re: How to set your x, y and z using a touch plate

I don't use a touch plate, mine is a thin piece of paper that works every time and I always set my zero to the center of the material. It's just easier for me. With that said....... Clamp down your material. Move the tip of the bit to the bottom left corner of the material where you want to set zero...

Re: Jewelry Making

Bruce, I use bits from these people.... http://www.onsrud.com/ http://www.precisebits.com/ Excellent tapered ball nose bits http://www.beckwithdecor.com/index_files/Cutters.htm Also excellent tapered ball nose bits but are longer so the side angle is different as well as the number of flutes in comp...

Re: Jewelry Making

Bruce, I checked out the link you provided and my Shark Pro Plus HD can handle that type of carving easily. A couple of things to keep in mind. I use small bits for fine detail and it's time consuming even for the smallest carving. The .005" engraving bit I use has a step over rate of of only .002" ...

Re: New User

Your table may be flat but you need to check and see if your router is perpendicular to the table. Bend a section of wire (coat hanger) like a Z, only with a straight section in the middle. Make the center leg about 4" long. Now, lay a piece of paper down, place the bent wire in the router, lower it...

Re: Pro to HD upgrades

I think there's enough info here to warrant bringing it back to the top and I encourage anyone with a Shark to read through the pages, several times. I have the HD model but still feel there are improvements and modifications that can be made so I've decided to tackle them all at once. I'll be modif...

Re: gantry

It's a matter of personal preference. I have mine mounted in the bottom holes and the router all the way down in the clamp. I want the most travel I can get, and if need be I can still raise the router a lot easier than the gantry.

Re: Z-axis Problems

I have to agree with the other two gentlemen. I cut a lot of toy cars out for my grandsons out of 2 bys and learned by experience your cutting depth is too aggressive, especially for the Shark, there's simply too much flex. I limit my depth to .1 and speed up the feed rate to keep from burning the p...

Re: router clamp

Keith, The same thing happened to mine, one of the ears just broke off. I contacted Sam and for $58 delivered I got one hell of a stout clamp. He does excellent work. Mine was for the Shark Pro Plus HD using a Bosch 1617 so here's a heads up. The clamp is 1" thick so the mounting bolts will need to ...

Re: Concentricity Between Tool Changes

You don't have to use router bits. If you have a 1/2" collet have you considered using a 1/2" brad point drill bit? If you've only got a 1/4" collet try using a 1/4" brad point bit for your pilot hole. The tips of end mills we use aren't really designed for continuous plunging especially in plywood.
