You can cut aluminum easy enough. I use an up-cut 1/4" single flute end mill. Single flute is supposed to be the best. You do not want to use any more than 2 flute as the chips will bind and your cut will be off. Also, some aluminum cuts/mills better than others. I use 6061-T651 and buy it in 12"x12...

I use the center almost always. I cannot remember the last time I used a corner. Some of my work includes pre-made cutting boards with corners that are round.
