Re: Cut 3-d software question
If you look in the tool path section of Vcarve you will see an icon that looks like a clock called "Toolpaths Summery". In there you can tweek the setting so that Vcarve matches the time it really takes to carve something
Re: Bits
A smaller angle will give you a cleaner detail, Higher resolution. But when you consider the difference of 1 degree over and 1/8th or 1/4" of depth it's not much
Re: Bits
Tapered bits are measured on the half-angle of the bit. The Tapered Ball Nose Bits from most suppliers fall into that range. PreciseBits is 5.4 degrees for a 1/16" ball nose , Amana is 6.2

Re: Shop Laptop recommendations?
I use a Zotac mini-PC in my shop similar to this one; http://www.amazon.com/Zotac-Mini-Barebones-System-ZBOX-BI320-U/dp/B00LJEFR68/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1417872657&sr=8-4&keywords=zotac It's a windows machine and runs the Shark control software and Aspire well. It fits up under my bench with the co...

Re: Router placement
The further down in the clamp you place the router, the more side pressure can deflect the bit. This isn't much of an issue with small bits and v-bits, but the deeper you cut and with larger bits it will become more apparent. I mount my router as close to the collet as I can and still have enough cl...

Re: Has anyone used the shark on stone?
I would suggest building a system to flood the carving area with water or cutting oil.
As for the carving itself, the shark is capable of carving what ever you can place on the table as long as you have the right bit and take your time. The harder the material shallower and slower you want to cut.

Re: Lithophanes with 1/32" ball nose bits
I use a 1/32" Tapered ball nose for some of my work. When to use it depends on the level of detail that the model has. The fine details get a lot clearer, but not much change on the larger areas. And the time to carve is greatly increased too. So I would say that on a piece that I really want to imp...

Re: Pricing for a toy
That's one of the problems with crafts. Most of the time you'll not get what the item is really worth. I've found it works to tell the customer just what it took to make an item before I tell them the price, and even then a lot of times you'll only get enough to cover your cost.

DFX files are imported in to Vcarve. Create a new project then under FILES select import and then import vectors.

AZRoger,
The kit you got from NW. What all was in it and what was the cost?
