Turn on Spindle without a toolpath

I just spent most of the day trying to true up my y-axis fence. Essentially I want to skim off a small amount to be sure the fence is aligned with the spindle moving down the Y-axis. Nearly every posting on YouTube suggested to just turn on the spindle (or router) and then jog the spindle up the Y axis. This would be acceptable if it was possible to turn on the spindle without running a toolpath.
This seems like a simple task made more difficult in an effort to simplify normal processing. I have seen people doing this with Mach3/4 as well as G-Sender, neither of which are supported by NextWave.
Is there a way to send G-code to the controller without a toolpath (.tap) file?
