Z axis alignment

Post by TomTurner »

I am finally getting around to tuning up and verifying my machine. while I was surfacing the spoil board I noticed ridges. I just measured and found that the z-Axis is out of alignment by about 1 degree. At first I was going to put shims under the aluminum router plate that I just added but then I noticed that the entire z-axis assembly had the misalignment. The z-axis rods and lead screw have the same error. I do a lot of precision mortise and tenon work so I would rather have the z axis aligned.

The two options I see are to shim in the z-axis assembly itself or six mounting bolts that hold each side of the x and z assembly. Shimming at the bearing plate at the guide rods looks bad because it will throw off the guide rod and lead screw alignment. I worry about opening up the 6 screws and keeping it aligned in the future.

Has anyone tried anything other than shimming at the router mount?

There are 4 screws on the top of the router mount that you can loosen to adjust a slight amount of tilt on the router.
