First 3d carve
Made my first 3d carve for my wife. Used a scrape piece of cherry and trimmed out with hickory.
Re: First 3d carve
very nice, which machine are you running? thanks
Re: First 3d carve
I have the Black Diamond Shark, and I'm having a lot of fun with it.
So many ideas that I want to carve, I have been recreating many things I've made years ago.
The Shark has replaced many of my woodworking tools (band saw, drill press, etc.).
My wife gives away most of my carves as gifts. So I get to play and she is OK with it.
We just got back from H D with more wood for this weekend.

Re: First 3d carve
Very nice cut. I like those deep cut 3D even though I quit doing 3D a year ago.
But are you sure that's cherry?
Looks like mahogany to me.

Re: First 3d carve
Karen,
It's cherry left over from a cabinet I made for my wife a couple years ago.
The bad lighting makes it look darker than it is. I just wanted to try a 3d carve.
Probably will be awhile before I do another one. Thanks for looking.

Re: First 3d carve
I have to agree with Karen, it looks like mahogany to me too. The grain isn't right for cherry.

Re: First 3d carve
Hey David -- thought about you a couple times this past week when I planed out an old piece of wild cherry and found the exact grain shown in your photos.
How 'bout that.![Wink ;)](./images/smilies/icon_e_wink.gif)

Re: First 3d carve
Karen,
Thanks for verifying the cherry. I knew it was cherry because I built two cabinet/side tables for the wife a few years ago for our bedroom.
I didn't want to get into a long tread about wood types/grains. I do have a board that I have had for many years that I'm using to make boxes for 2 litho's.
It has an interesting grain pattern and insect bore holes. plus it's very light almost feels like balsa wood. I'll post pictures after Christmas because the litho's are a gift for my wife.
I also love your work, please keep posting pictures.
Thanks again.
