E Pluribus Unum keeper box

E Pluribus Unum, from many one. I ran 36 separate TAP files to create this box. The full through dovetails were made on my shark pro plus details here: http://www.cncsharktalk.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3016

This is red oak, the top is quarter sawn. The hinges and handles are red mahogany. The oak is just clear finished with tongue oil to let the wood mellow over time. The Mahogony is rubbed with 2 coats of poly.

What's a keeper box? It means I'm keeping it.

Absolutely gorgeous. Did you make the hinges with sharkie also. And if so maybe a tip on how.
Merry Christmas,
Tim

Thank you. Yes, everything was made on the Shark.

The hinges are one of the wings of the front eagle. Using Aspire, I added a 1/2" diameter cylinder to the large end to house the hinge pin. The model is mirrored to get the two hinge halves. After they are carved out, I pick the two halves to match each other and one gets cut with one notch in the middle using a profile cut and a 1/16" bit. The other gets two notches to match, one at each end.

Then after you make sure there's enough clearance for them to operate smoothly, I mount them on a right angle block on the drill press and drill the pin hole. I used a 3/16" brass tube. After it's inserted, I place 2 nail sets in the ends and tap a few times with a hammer to flare the end just enough to hold the pin in place.

Using 2 part epoxy, attach the back first let it set then the top.

Merry Christmas

Nice work Bill.
Now I need to get planning on a way to make something like this using the Skechup 3D warehouse, cut 3D, and VCarve.
