Turning a Loupe cover into a Woody

Post by BillK »

Pretty neat use of Aspire or V-Carve software.

This was an aluminum Loupe cover as shown in the first picture. As can be seen its a pretty complicated geometric shape, too much to measure with any accuracy and redraw.

The solution, snap a picture against a black background, import picture, convert to vectors (I used the color mode and selected until the aluminum shape was filled). Then I took a few measurable points and scaled the drawing until the sizes matched. Using the vector outline and Aspire, I then converted the shape to a carving with the company logo. I carved it into a 1x3 piece of red oak, applied spray acrylic, put a piece of tape over it to hold it while I ripped to the final thickness on my table saw.

A few drops of superglue and you get a woody loupe cover.
